HYPERPIGMENTATION

Are suffering from hyperpigmentation ?

Hyperpigmentation of the skin is caused by an increase in melanin , a substance in the body that is responsible for color (pigment) .
A common form of hyperpigmentation is melasma , where the skin develops brown spots in areas that have been exposed to the sun . Pregnancy and the intake of birth control pills can also cause this condition to develop and sun exposure can worsen it .
Anyone can be prone to hyperpigmentation but there is a higher incidence among women with darker skin . For pregnant women the condition is often referred to as the ‘ mask of pregnancy ’ and may reverse when the pregnancy is over and also , if birth control pills are stopped.
But for others , the condition can be a stubborn and persistent problem .

SO WHAT KIND OF TREATMENTS ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ?

HYDROQUINONE -
A common topical treatment for hyperpigmentation . You can find over-the-counter products that contain 2% hydroquinone (the maximum currently allowed for over-the-counter products) but your dermatologist can prescribe a stronger dose of 4%, which could be more effective , if your skin requires it.

RETINOIDS , GLYCOLIC , SALICYLIC -
These topical treatments can cause side effects of skin irritation , burning , itching and redness so you need to determine if your skin can tolerate these ingredients and also you need to apply these products for several months before seeing any improvements .

KOJIC ACID -
A mushroom extract which has been used in products to lighten the skin , but results can vary and it can also result in skin irritation .

CHEMICAL PEELS -
Peels that contain glycolic or salicylic acid work by exfoliating the upper-most layer of your skin and the dark area with it but there could be side effects , including irritation or discoloration of the skin .

MICRODERMABRATION –
Fine crystals are sprayed on your skin . It works like a chemical peel by removing the upper layer of the skin and the area with brown spots . Like chemical peels , there could be side effects to this treatment.

LASER TREATMENTS -
To the extent other therapies are more effective , but these can be costly and they may not be effective in the long-term .

Regular use of sunscreen to prevent the reappearance of spots or development of new ones .
From the research I have done , hyperpigmentation can be difficult to treat and sun exposure can quickly trigger its reappearance .

WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH HYPERPIGMENTATION ?

ALL FINGERS ARE NOT EQUAL

There’s a reason why there are so many options when you check out the moisturizer aisle at the skincare store .
A moisturizer is not a one-size-fits-all type of product . In fact , what works for you may not work for your best friend , sister , or mother , they all have unique skin types that require a more tailored product .
By understanding what type of moisturizer works best for your skin , you can get rid of some of your skin issues - it’s dryness or oiliness .

DRY SKIN -
If your skin constantly feels parched and you tend to have flaky patches around your nose , you have dry skin  . Dry skin is practically crying out for moisture , so make sure that you give it everything it needs with an oil-based moisturizer that contains hydrating ingredients like coconut oil and shea butter . And since dry skin can look sallow and dull , think about choosing a moisturizer that is a bit pearlescent to help wake up your skin and make it look positively dewy .

OILY SKIN -
When you suffer from oily skin , the shine and clogged pores can have you wearing off any type of extra moisturizer forever . Unfortunately , opting to go moisturizer-free won’t help dry up excess oil , but it will dry out your skin . And, when your skin feels dry , your oil glands secrete more oil to help balance out your skin , which can result in overactive pores . Reduce how much oil your pores produce by choosing a water-based moisturizer that feels light and fresh . You can even find mattifying products if your biggest gripe is the shine that your oil causes .

COMBINATION SKIN -
Having combination skin can be a double-edged sword . On one hand, your skin is pretty balanced . On the other hand , it’s like having skin with a split personality – sometimes oily and sometimes dry . But don’t forget that both require moisture , so invest in two types of moisturizer to keep everything in check . You’ll need a lighter moisturizer for your T-zone , where you usually get oily, and then a thicker, more intensive lotion for your dry patches, which are usually around the eyes, around the nose, and on the chin .

ACNE PRONE SKIN -
If your biggest skin problem is acne , putting new products on your skin can definitely make you break out . That’s why your best bet is a moisturizer that also contains acne medication , such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide . When you apply your moisturizer , the medication will go to work to help dry up current breakouts , eliminate acne-causing bacteria and help you stay in the clear .
Just avoid heavy moisturizers – water-based is best .

SENSITIVE SKIN -
Do you have skin that gets red and irritated if you use a new product ? That’s probably because you have sensitive skin that reacts to the added stuff sometimes found in moisturizers , such as colors and dyes .
Protect your sensitive skin by choosing a moisturizer that is free of colors and dyes and instead includes soothing ingredients such as cucumber , green tea and oatmeal for your skin to drink in. Don’t forget to look for a lotion that also contains sunscreen to help your sensitive skin avoid damage.

SKIN CHANGES -
One thing to keep in mind is the fact that your skin will change types throughout the years . Changes to hormones , age , and even geographical location can mean that while your skin was once dry , it’s suddenly oily or your combination suddenly becomes more acne-prone .
Assess the skin you have now and make sure you’re not moisturizing the skin you had ten years ago . It’s nearly impossible to continue using the same product for years and years , so its best you find the most suitable moisturizer for your skin type , you’ll need to reevaluate when major changes happen to your skin occur over the years .

Without a moisturizer , your skin is left to fend for itself against a drying environment , the abuse you put it through every day , and even the harsh rays of the sun .
By making the moisturizer a part of your regular routine , choosing and using the best one becomes a no- brainer .

WHATEVER TYPE OF SKIN YOU HAVE , THERES A MOISTURIZER OUT THERE FOR YOU AND YOUR UNIQUE SKIN .

STRETCH MARKS - CAUSES , TREATMENTS , PREVENTION .

Stretching it , pulling it , rolling it - I played with my hair band today . The snap made me think of the permanent lines or striae that occur when we stretch and pull our skin a bit too far – stretch marks .

These marks are seen when the skin is pulled by rapid growth ( puberty ) , weight gain ( pregnancy ) , ( muscle building) or stretching or by using steroid induced skincare products which thin the skin .
In 75 to 90% women it’s a lasting token that reminds them of the rigors of pregnancy .

As the skin stretches , tiny tears are seen in the dermis ; they start appearing as red or dark horizontal threads along the skin and gradually end up as permanent scars . With effective skincare routines , patience and time , we can diminish them away .

KEEP THE MOISTURE UP  -

Use Natural oils ; Almond , olive , castor , argan  or coconut oils and creams with jojoba extracts , aloe vera , vitamin E , cocoa or shea butter have been known to reduce recently developed stretch marks . The key here is being regular with your moisturization over an extended period of time . There is no fast action to taking off  STRETCH MARKS .

THINNED SKIN -

There is no skin lightener that doesn't thin the skin .
Constant application of a skin lightner on thinned skin will damage the dermis . Avoid constant application on thinned skin , instead strengthen thinned skin with the oils listed above .
4-5 days a week is enough for the application of any lightner , on order days you should practice skin building .

SLOUGH IT OFF -

Exfoliation is useful to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks . Shedding away affected layers of skin to expose the unharmed and fresh layers of skin below is a great step that you can take .
The success of exfoliation completely depends on the severity and the location of the scars .

BABY BUMP TIPS -

Drink loads of water and juices during pregnancy to keep the skin hydrated .
Avoid the urge to scratch your tummy . Use a powder or rub some lotion to alleviate the itchiness . Exercising tones the body skin and increases skin elasticity .

FOLLOW THE RIGHT STEPS AND IT WILL KEEP YOUR SKIN FIRM , CELLULITE FREE AND HEALTHY .

DETOXIFYING SKINCARE TIPS

Now that the holiday has passed and we retreat back to our more simple and quiet days (at least for the time being) , our bodies , when not at the gym may be in need of a good detox !
To achieve any skincare goals you must have a skin cleanse .

All that food and drinking , late nights and travel are sure to have taken a toll on your skin .
Starting your skincare regimes with a fresh , clean and hydrated cleanse will allow time for your skin’s radiance and health to re-emerge .  It will offer your skincare products an optimal opportunity to work its best .
A detox will remove toxins in your body and will help purge the body of impurities , stimulate circulation and rejuvenate cell turnover .  All important activities in helping your largest organ reveal its natural beauty to the world .

TRY THESE SIMPLE TIPS AND SEE HOW GREAT YOUR SKIN CAN LOOK

ELIMINATE CAFFEINE

May be a bit difficult if you love your coffee , however replacing your daily intake by drinking tea will do wonders for you skin .
Give an organic green tea that is loaded with antioxidants a try .  It is so light and fragrant you will truly enjoy its taste .  I suggest drinking 3 cups of tea daily , it will slow the aging of the skin and improve its quality .

EXERCISE REGULARLY

That’s a must !
Walk , run… dance… keep moving ! Get your heart pumping and blood flowing .

EAT FRUITS

Fruit does your body good .  In fact , it helps to flush out any toxins in your body .
Try a 24 hour fruit diet to help rejuvenate your body and enhance waste removal from the body . The removal of waste and compounds from the blood stream will help in getting rid of allergies , improving skin radiance and increase your vitalized energy .
The strongest detoxifying effect is caused by the acidic fruits – grapes , lemons and oranges .  I found it interesting to find out that a fruit diet also has fewer calories .

NATURAL FACIAL MASK

Try one with oatmeal and yogurt and almonds to naturally and lightly scrub off any dead skin cells . (Think glowing skin ! ) .  I have a recipe for an egg face mask that would help exfoliate the skin . Raw eggs make easy and wonderful face masks .
Beat 2 raw eggs mix with a little water and honey and you are all set ! Apply , wait until it dries and wash off with warm water .

MOISTURIZE REGULARLY AND DRINK WATER

Hydrating the skin externally will help the body to naturally detoxify .
Consuming your vitamins daily , particularly ones that contain Fish oils will aid in maintaining this hydration and of course drinking a minimum of 8 cups of filtered water daily is necessary to help keep flushing out the toxins .

WHATS YOUR SKIN DETOXIFYING SECRET ?

FACTORS THAT AGGRAVATE ACNE .

Acne is a pretty common problem for many of us . Although younger people are more prone to breakouts , adults can suffer with the embarrassment , annoyance and pain of acne as well .
Here are some surprising factors that contribute to acne and how you can avoid them !

HAIR PRODUCTS

When it comes to styling your hair , what you’re using and how you’re styling might actually make your skin worse .
Pomade acne is a type of acne caused by hair-care products . When the products come in contact with your skin oil seeps into your pores and traps bacteria there , resulting in pus , redness and eventually whiteheads and blackheads .
To avoid pomade acne , try styling your hair so it sits away from the face . Use fewer products that contain heavy oils and chemicals . This will prevent clogged pores and improve the quality of your skin . Water based or all natural hair styling products will also help .

YOUR PARTNER

Sharing towels , sheets and pillowcases with your partner can expose additional facial oils . This oil is foreign to your skin and can clog your pores , leading to…guess what – breakouts ! Unfortunately, kissing can also contribute to the problem . Acne caused by your partner is called consort acne .
To reduce breakouts caused by your partner avoid sharing towels and pillowcases . Make sure you each have a towel in the bathroom so that you are never tempted to use each other’s . Change sheets and pillowcases frequently and avoid sleeping and cuddling on your partner’s pillow .

TRAVELING

Whether it’s the change in humidity , the water or the weather , environmental changes can cause acne . Whenever your face is exposed to shifts , it overcompensates and causes a breakout . While you probably don’t want to cancel your vacation and obviously can’t change the weather , there are some things you can do .
Bottle some mineral water from home and take it with you for the sole purpose of washing your face . Never use low-quality hotel soaps or moisturizers that your face is not used to . If you plan to be out of town for an extended period of time , be sure you bring enough of your usual cleanser and moisturizer to last for the duration of the vacation .

EYE WEAR

Something many people aren’t aware of is “ pressure acne ” caused by wearing glasses .
Eyewear frames collect dirt and oil , that get forced into the pores when the frames rest against your face .
To resolve this problem , clean your glasses at least once per day. Use warm water and soap when you can , but also keep some makeup wipes with you for those times that you can’t make it home .

SUNSCREEN

Although sunscreen is intended to protect your skin , it can contribute to acne . Sunscreen contains physical agents that act as a shield against the sun . Unfortunately, these contain titanium oxide or zinc oxide , which promote more sweat . The sweat is often trapped underneath the sunscreen shield , leading to acne flare-ups .
To prevent breakouts due to sunscreen , always read the ingredients label . Look for products that contain oxybenzone , octocylene , or avobenzone , as it will be a better product for your acne-prone skin .
Acne can spoil your day and keep you from being the confident person you want to be .
Keep in mind that acne isn’t always caused by your diet or hormones , but by many other factors that you can control .

COCONUT OIL , THE NATURAL ANTI-AGING TREATMENT .

Markets , pharmacies and supermarkets are full of products for skin care .
The problem is that most of these preparations contain many chemicals that may be harmful to the skin , so it is best to delay the aging process naturally . One way of doing this is coconut oil !

WHAT IS COCONUT OIL ?

Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel of matured coconuts harvested from the coconut palm . It has various applications in the FOOD AND COSMETIC INDUSTRY .

Coconut oil as a  moisturizer serves to hydrate and protect the skin from various diseases and infections .
Antioxidants in the oil encourage and facilitate the fight against aging skin .

You can protect your skin in two ways : eating or rubbing oil on the skin . It is better to use coconut oil in it’s virgin state to get good results as when processed the oil loses its antioxidants and nutrients that are so very beneficial .
This oil can be used on dry skin or dry areas like heels or knees to soften up instantly . You will need a few drops of this oil which is also quite greasy to touch .
In some parts of the world ladies would luxuriate in coconut milk baths spiced up with flowers , spices , herbs and essential oils to soften their skin . These traditions have now been incorporated in many spa treatments .
A quick at home spa treatment would be adding  few drops of coconut oil plus essential oils to your bath . Guess what ! coconut pulp can be used as a body scrub too , it exfoliates and hydrates the skin . Many lotions have coconut oil present in them .
For this , read product labels carefully and see if they meet your needs .
The body needs replenishment in skin smoothness , tone and elasticity . Coconut oil is widely used in spas worldwide for skin rejuvenation . It is home-made and is a natural beauty recipe .
For this you need eight tablespoons of coconut oil , four tablespoons of castor oil , and two tablespoons of almond oil . Microwave the coconut oil . When in liquid state and without allowing it to boil remove from heat and add the other oils to it . Stir this oil mixture until well blended . This oil when applied to your skin leaves it supple , toned and younger looking .

SHEA BUTTER AND YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE .

WHAT IS SHEA BUTTER
Shea butter is a fatty substance obtained from the nuts of the shea tree in africa , used in cosmetic skin preparations and food .

WHAT MAKES SHEA BUTTER SO UNIQUE ?

It's the best natural moisturizer gotten from MOTHER NATURE .

BENEFITS OF SHEA BUTTER

HOW TO USE  – When shopping for Shea butter make sure it is unrefined and pure . Many of the skincare products claiming to have Shea butter in them may in reality have diluted , refined shea butter or filled with preservatives and additives . You should be buying 100% fresh Shea butter for maximum results .

Do you know that pure Shea butter is also used as cooking oil in some countries due to its edible properties ? It’s a fine example of what’s good to eat is great for the skin !

TIPS TO SHOP NATURAL SHEA BUTTER - Here are a few tips to know whether the Shea butter you are buying is truly pure and natural .
100% natural African Shea butter has a smooth soft texture . When fresh it has a tinge of light grey to yellow colour with a natural aroma that reduces with time . Although it becomes harder with age , it never loses it sheen . It can easily be melted in sunlight or normal room temperature but it solidifies when cooled . There’s no specific expiry date for this product but it’s best to use in its first two years.

NOTE - DO NOT APPLY TO FACE IF YOU HAVE OILY SKIN AS THIS COULD TRIGGER BREAKOUTS .

GLYCOLIC ACID , ITS USES AND BENEFITS

WHAT IS GLYCOLIC ACID ?

Glycolic acid , also known as hydroxyacetic acid , is the smallest member of the a-hydroxy acid family . It is colorless and odorless, and is known for its high solubility in water . This chemical is found in sugarcane , unripe grapes , pineapple, and various melons . It is isolated and extracted for various skincare uses .

GLYCOLIC ACID USES .

Removes Dead Skin Cells

Glycolic acid helps revitalize the skin in a few ways . The first goal is to manipulate the outermost layer of the skin by weakening the attachment of dead skin cells . This will cause the dull top layer of your skin to disintegrate and reveal a healthier and younger looking skin beneath .

Stimulates Collagen

This acid also stimulates the collagen and elastin found in the second layer of your skin . These are the components which allow for your skin to stretch and expand . If you pinch a small area of your skin and it does not immediate bounce back, then chances are your elastin is weak and not in a good condition . Time and age play a big role in the reduction of elastin and collagen , which is why many women fervently turn to anti-aging remedies by their late 20s . Products containing glycolic acid will often render better results .

Exfoliates

When it comes to acne scarring , this ingredient still reigns supreme . It works as a powerful exfoliant which also evens out the top and bottom area of a scar. It is also capable of removing some of the gray appearance women often report along with their scarring . Acne scars are caused by the destruction of skin tissue as a result of a particularly bad blemish , and glycolic acid is capable of restoring what that pimple stole away . Scars have reportedly become flatter and less visible with the use of a glycolic acid product for 6 months to a year .

Glycolic acid is most helpful in renewing and refining the skin , It fades acne scars and discolouration away from the surface of your cherished complexion .

NEW SKIN , NEW YOU .

Did you know that your skin is constantly shedding dead cells ? Your body gets rid of 30,000 to 40,000 old skin cells every day ! That means the average person sheds approximately 1 1/2 Ibs of dead skin cells each year .
With so much natural turnover , your skin needs a little help sloughing off the dead weight to reveal smooth fresh skin below . Cleansers remove dirt and oil from the skin , but they don’t always remove all of the dead skin cells .
To effectively slough off dead cells you need to use an exfoliator so as to prevent dull skin and clogged pores .

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU EXFOLIATE

Exfoliating has important health benefits all year round . How often you should exfoliate will differ based on the body part and your skin type . The goal of exfoliation is to leave skin feeling softer and looking healthier . Over-exfoliating could end up doing more harm than good to your skin .

FACE

There’s a thin line between not exfoliating your facial skin enough and exfoliating too much .
Not enough – you could end up with dull skin and acne . Too much and you can end up with red irritated skin .
The skin on your face is more delicate and should be exfoliated less often then the body .
People with normal skin type can handle exfoliating 3 times per week . Those with dry or sensitive skin should only exfoliate 1 time per week .
If you have extremely sensitive skin you need to be careful not to overdo exfoliation . It can lead to irritation and scarring . Those with extremely oily skin may need to exfoliate more often to clear pores.
While exfoliating helps to keep acne in check , excessive rubbing or using harsh exfoliants can lead to irritation and increase in acne . To ensure you don’t cross the line , pay attention to your skin . If it is becoming overly dry or irritated , scale back on the number of days you exfoliate or try a gentler exfoliator . Avoid any type of exfoliation near your eyes . The skin near your eyes is far too sensitive and doesn’t need exfoliation .

BODY

In addition to helping prevent acne on the body , exfoliation can also help you avoid ingrown hairs by preventing dead skin cells from clogging follicles where you’ve shaved or waxed . It can also help even out skin tone and keep your skin hydrated and soft . Skin on the body can handle a bit more exfoliation then the face . People with normal skin can exfoliate 3-4 times per week . Those with sensitive skin may need less .
As with the face , pay attention to how the skin on your body reacts . If it gets overly dry or red , you know it’s time to cut back on the number of days , ease up on how vigorously you are scrubbing or opt for a more gentle form of exfoliation .

TYPES OF EXFOLIATION

There are 2 types of exfoliation , physical and chemical .

PHYSICAL EXFOLIATION

Physical exfoliation involves physically scrubbing the skin with a tool or scrub to remove dead skin cells . Tools such as microfiber cloths , hammam sponge , adhesive exfoliating sheets and More abrasive materials such as sloughing sponges and loofahs should only be used on your body . The tough skin on your feet may require an even harsher tool such as a pumice stone or file to remove dead skin from heels .
Physical exfoliant scrubs that include gentle exfoliating micro beads or ingredients like oatmeal are suitable for use on your face or body . Scrubs made with salt, sugar, crushed apricot kernel , almond shells or other tiny granules are great for exfoliating the body , but the particles might scratch the face .

CHEMICAL EXFOLIATION

Chemical exfoliators are available for home use in scrub form as well as in professional treatments . Chemical exfoliators contain acids , which loosen and lift dead cells , leaving new , vibrant skin behind .
Studies have shown that chemical exfoliators including hyroxy acids like Lactic Acid , Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid (best for acne) can also deliver results in improved skin texture and a reduction in fine lines and hyperpigmentation . Those that contain Retinol have also been found to improve the visible signs of aging .
Chemical exfoliators can be more drying to skin than physical exfoliators , so you may need to limit usage to 2 times per week .

Your skin is your largest organ . It requires special attention to keep it looking and feeling great . Incorporating an exfoliator into your regimen will help along the removal of dead skin cells and leave your skin with a healthy glow .

WHAT'S THE RIGHT SKINCARE ROUTINE FOR YOU

When it comes to aging skin , most people agree that they would like to age as gracefully as possible .
The changes you see as you age can depend on several factors like genetics and sun exposure , however if you develop healthy skin habits , you might be able to focus on prevention more than cure .
Take a look at the list below for skin care habits that promote healthy skin for the long run at any age.

SPF  –

The sun will age your skin faster than anything else . Use  SPF every day no matter what the weather is like outside . For the extremely hot african weather would recommend SPF 50 and above .

VITAMINS  –

Take a daily dose of skin healthy vitamins at every age !
Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) is one of the most important vitamins your body needs . Your skin needs Vitamin C to produce collagen . Vitamin C brightens , lightens , tightens , and is an incredible antioxidant !
Vitamin E a substance found naturally in many foods , carries  tremendous benefit for skin cells . Through its antioxidant properties , vitamin E can help fight the signs of wrinkling and aging , protect you from sun damage , and even potentially lower skin cancer risks .

HYDRATION  –

Water is one of your skin’s best friends . Drink at least half of your body weight in ounces per day . Water will help keep your skin hydrated as it flushes out toxins in the body .

EXERCISE  –

Yes , exercise is great for your skin !  When you exercise, your blood circulation increases which will promote healthy skin cell turnover .

DON'T SMOKE  –

When you smoke , your body will show signs of aging a lot faster .  Why ?  Smoke increases free radicals which are unstable molecules that attack healthy cells .  Free radicals are the second greatest cause of aging signs !

HEALTHY DIET  –

What you put in your body affects how your skin looks .  Fresh fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants , (these are powerful fighters against free radicals) so your skin will thank you for choosing them over other , less healthy snacks .

CLEANSE TWICE  –

Cleansing twice means once in the morning and once at night , so don’t forget about the nighttime cleanse .  When you go to sleep in your makeup , your skin doesn’t have the freedom to repair itself from the day .

With the ideal skincare routine your skin will be in good shape for years to come .
